After several months of waiting, the World Motor Sport Council has approved the new power unit regulations that will come into force in Formula 1 from the 2026 season, one of the keys to the arrival of Porsche and Audi to the category.
These are the four key pillars of the 2026 F1 engine regulations:
- Keep up the show: The 2026 power units will perform similarly to today’s, using high-output, high-revving V6 internal combustion engines and avoiding excessive performance differentiation to allow for better drivability.
- Environmental sustainability: The 2026 power unit will include an increase in electrical power deployment up to 50% and will use 100% sustainable fuel.
- Financial Sustainability: Financial regulations regarding power units will reduce overall costs for competitors while retaining the state-of-the-art technological showcase that is at the core of Formula 1.
- Attractive to new power unit manufacturers: The regulations are intended to make it possible and attractive for newcomers to join the sport at a competitive level.
