The Italian manufacturer returned to MotoGP in 2015 after an 11-year absence, joining forces with satellite outfit Gresini Racing.

This allowed Aprilia to take advantage of the economic benefits that the independent teams achieved thanks to the MotoGP organizers, Dorna Sports , while in turn already having a team of mechanics and paddock facilities.

But Aprilia and Gresini parted ways at the end of the 2021 season, with the latter becoming a satellite team to Ducati for 2022.

Aprilia’s 2021 was his strongest MotoGP season since his return, scoring his first podium finish in the modern era of MotoGP when Aleix Espargaró finished third at the British Grand Prix .

They were the only manufacturer that was able to fully develop their bike for 2021 despite the COVID-19 rules, as it is the only one with concessions, and they radically revised their RS-GP .

Aprilia will once again have Aleix Espargaró and a Maverick Viñales as riders who this time will compete for the entire season after having reached five of the last six rounds of 2021 after his sudden departure from Yamaha.

After finishing the Sepang pre-season tests as the second fastest rider, Espargaro said the new Aprilia was “incredible” in the corners, but suffered from some vibration problems.

“The best are the corners, the bike is much more compact,” said Espargaro.

“They did a good job because it’s not easy with these bikes: the engine, the electronics are very big and it’s not easy to downsize and put everything under the chassis.

“So they did a good job. The bike is not a revolution, it’s just a continuation of the RS-GP 21, but narrower, more agile, turns more.”

“What we have to improve is that I still have a lot of vibrations. Here in Malaysia, I remember that in 2020 I also had chattering (vibrations).”

“That’s something we have to improve on. And as I said, in this era of MotoGP you also need power.”

“The engine is a bit more powerful, but not enough. The chassis is also different and the weight distribution changes a bit.”

“From the first lap on this circuit the bike was cornering well and that helps you a lot. But it also creates a problem, because especially in the fast corners, the speed I can reach is incredible, it’s amazing.”

“But it creates a lot more chattering . But I think it’s my first time riding here in Malaysia and I never go wide, it’s impossible to go wide.”

All manufacturers and teams except Mooney VR46 have already unveiled their 2022 liveries, with the latter doing so on February 24.
