They were on their way to their families by coach to celebrate the Muslim Eid festival this week. But the trip back home ended in tragedy.

Islamabad – At least 28 people were killed in a bus collision with a truck in central Pakistan.

Around 40 others were injured, said the local police. Accordingly, the coach brought mainly workers from the industrial city of Sialkot in the Punjab province to their hometown in the remote Dera Ghazi Khazi Khan district so that they could celebrate the Muslim Eid festival with their families this week.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are still ongoing, police officials said. Initial results indicated that the bus was traveling too fast. The road on which the accident happened was also in poor condition. Accidents are not uncommon in Pakistan due to the poor condition of many roads, obsolete vehicles and lax safety precautions. According to official statistics, at least 5,000 people are killed in road accidents every year in the South Asian country with a population of more than 200 million. dpa
