Axel Schulz laments the "unspeakable Ossi-Wessi debate"

Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Axel Schulz no longer likes to hear East-West palaver. The session came at exactly the right time for his career as a boxer.

Berlin – For ex-professional boxer Axel Schulz (52), German unity came just in time. “I was 21 – the best time for an athlete to start his international career. In the GDR, it would never have been an option to turn my passion for boxing into a profession, ”he recalled for a collection of thoughts on the Day of German Unity in 2021.

His children, eleven and 14 years old, could no longer do anything with the subject of East-West today. “This unspeakable Ossi-Wessi debate should be out of date after 30 years.”

For Schulz, the date November 9th also has a private meaning: It is his birthday. On the day the Wall came down in 1989, he wrote that he invited friends. “We heard Udo Lindenberg on the tape recorder. No radio, no television. That’s why we didn’t notice the fall of the Berlin Wall at first. ”A few days later he came to West Berlin.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, Schulz went into professional boxing and fought against the American George Foreman for the world championship in 1995. Before that, the man from Brandenburg had already won the GDR five times in his age group. dpa
