The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix that takes place this weekend at the Marco Simoncelli Circuit may give birth to the new 2021 MotoGP world champion. The only mathematical options for this not to happen are through a victory for Pecco Bagnaia , second in the general, or that the French finish Sunday adding three points less than his rival.
Regardless of what Fabio Quartararo can do, the only outcome that is up to Pecco to prevent the close of the fight is a win.
“The only thing I can do is win to try to stay alive in the fight,” admitted the young Ducati rider. “52 points is a lot, but we’re going to try,” he added.
Pecco cruised to victory in late September at this very circuit.
“It will be different this weekend, the weather conditions will be very different, it will be colder and there is forecast of rain, but I have to bet and give everything for Sunday’s race”, he explained.
In his third season in the top category and first as an official Ducati rider, Bagnaia feels that he has exceeded his expectations by taking the open World Championship to this point.
“Of course our ambition is always to improve race by race, but in the last two seasons in MotoGP I was never fighting for the championship. In fact, I had quite a few problems, some falls and an injury with a fracture. This year the objective was to continue with my growth and I think that after the summer we took a step forward, and lately another one. This allows us to maintain growth that can make us even better for next year”, he explained.
Bagnaia was one of the protagonists of the press conference prior to the Grand Prix, in which the provisional 2021 calendar was discussed, announced with 21 races , the longest in history.
“It would be very good if the calendar was confirmed, to be able to go to the new circuits, to places like Australia (two years without going) and all those countries, it would be very good, hopefully”, he valued.
The fact that so many races are held can make the championship lose some exclusivity, they suggested.
“If you look at F1, they have 23 races and the exclusivity is very high. I don’t think that’s going to change, but the way we are now, the rest time isn’t much. It’s fine, but to compete with a MotoGP you have a lot of stress and less rest times would not be good, “he warned.
Ducati announced this Thursday that it will be the motorcycle supplier of the MotoE electric championship from 2023.
“I am happy with Ducati’s decision to take over MotoE. It is a change, without a doubt, but the factory knows very well how to make motorcycles. Personally I don’t know if I would like to try the new electric motorcycle”, settled the one from Torino .
