Bagnaia: "I still don't want to think about the championship"

Pecco Bagnaia is, right now, the most fit rider on the MotoGP grid, as evidenced by the four victories he has achieved in the last seven races, being the rider with the most wins in his locker this year.

However, the Italian has shown signs of enormous irregularity, accumulating up to four zeros, three of them in the last six rounds, which keeps him significantly away from the championship leader, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo.

Bagnaia’s progression, however, begins to have to be taken into account in order to resolve the title. The Ducati rider finished the Portuguese Grand Prix, fifth race of the year, 10th overall (31 points), 38 behind the leader, Quartararo. The race in Germany, the tenth on the calendar, was finished 6th overall, with 81 points, 91, no less, than the Frenchman.

However, in the last two stops, Assen and Silverstone, Pecco has added 50 points, reaching 131 and placing himself 49 behind El Diablo, who has cut 42 points in two races.

Despite the fact that between the guy from Nice and the guy from Turin there is a third element in the equation called Aleix Espargaró, (second overall, 22 points behind the leader), the jump made by the Ducati guy in the last two races fully placed in the fight for the championship, which is now disputed three-way.

“After the weekend at Silverstone we have been able to recover quite a few points in the general classification, but I still don’t want to think about the Championship”, Bagnaia explains, however, in the run-up to the Austrian Grand Prix.

“I want to stay focused and go race by race, always trying to achieve the best possible result”, he tries to take the pressure off the Italian, who few expected in the battle for victory after some rather discreet previous training sessions.

“In the last Grand Prix I was able to achieve an unexpected victory and I think it was one of the most beautiful of my career,” he recalls.

The venue for the next race, the Red Bull Ring, looks ripe for Pecco’s interests, as Ducati have dominated on that track since returning to the calendar, and Yamaha have never won on the current track.

“Now we come to Austria, a track that has historically always been favorable to Ducati. We will have to see what this new chicane is like, but I am convinced that we can do it well. I am ready and eager to race here again”, warns the rider from Piedmont.
