Experts warn of a storm surge on the Baltic Sea coast. Heavy gusts of wind are expected.

Hamburg – The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) warns of a possible storm surge on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In the course of the day, the water levels rise up to one meter above the mean water level, the BSH announced on Thursday morning (01/20/2022). Peaks above this are also possible. The highest water levels are expected in the evening.

Storm surges on the Baltic coast are divided into four classes by the BSH. Values of 1.00 to 1.25 meters are referred to as a storm surge, while values of 1.25 to 1.50 meters above the mean water level are reached in the case of a moderate storm surge*. During severe storm surges, water levels of 1.50 to 2.00 meters above the mean water level are measured. During very severe storm surges, the level rises to more than 2.00 meters above mean water level.
