This is the first time that the Beast will start without traffic in front of it since it did so at the 2018 Catalunya Grand Prix, when it was competing in Moto3. As for the rest, this is Gresini’s second pole position in the heavy bike category so far this season, after the one Fabio Di Giannantonio took at Mugello.
Waiting to see what happens in the race this Sunday, the crush of the Rimini rider not only revitalizes his candidacy for victory in Austria, but also his options to promote the official Ducati team with a view to the coming course.
Bastianini’s time, moreover, served him to record a new absolute record on this track. At his side will Pecco Bagnaia and Jack Miller, who in this way will lead the enormous display of Ducati in Spielberg.
Jorge Martín will open the second row, while Fabio Quartararo (fifth) and Johann Zarco will form the second.
Maverick Viñales will start from seventh and as the best placed of the Aprilia pair, and will be accompanied by Joan Mir (eighth) and Aleix Espargaró, whose last lap was canceled by the stewards for having exceeded the established track limits.
Di Giannantonio closed the top ten, from which Alex Rins (eleventh) was left out, as well as the four Honda riders and the four KTM riders.
