Being unemployed harms health and increases the risk of premature death

preocupado Analyzing data from 20 million people in 15 Western countries over the last four decades, American scientists from McGill University and Stony Brook University have calculated that being unemployed increases the risk of dying prematurely by up to 63% . Researchers attribute this to the fact that being unemployed causes stress and affects socioeconomic status, which results in less health care. This is especially evident in men, who see their mortality increase by 78%, especially if they are unemployed when they are not yet 50 years old.

On the other hand, the GEDA Study, carried out in Germany between 2008 and 2009 by the Robert Koch Institute, showed that people between 30 and 59 years old who are unemployed suffer more often and for longer physical and emotional problems , such as insomnia, anxiety or addiction to certain substances, which is why they also use health services more.

Finally, other research recently published in the journal Demography revealed that the most common pathologies among those who lose their jobs are hypertension, heart problems, heart attacks and diabetes.
