Berlin has experienced an Islamist attack on Wednesday that has left at least six people injured after a series of crashes on a highway in the German capital. The German Prosecutor’s Office has taken little time to determine this action as an “attack of Islamist motivation”, although without ruling out other hypotheses. The crashes resulted in three serious injuries and as many minor injuries, including a motorcyclist, according to a Fire Department spokesman. Several sections of this road, located near the center of the German capital, were still closed this Wednesday morning. “From what we know so far, it is an Islamist-motivated attack,” said a spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office. However, it has also pointed out that the suspect, identified as a 30-year-old Iraqi and who is in detention, suffers from mental problems. The alleged attacker had posted on Facebook before the incidents images of the vehicle used, along with religious messages written in Arabic and in which he used the term “martyr.” Investigators have no indications that the detainee is linked to a terrorist organization, although security service sources consulted by the DPA news agency have assured that he had contacted a person who was already booked. According to the newspaper ‘Tagesspiegel’, this person is related to the Islamic State. The suspect is scheduled to appear before a judge this Wednesday, who will determine whether to go to provisional prison accused of attempted murder, the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office have reported in a joint statement. “We do not consider that it is an accident,” said a spokesman for the Public Ministry.At the time of his arrest, the suspect claimed that he was carrying a “dangerous object” and the security forces disabled a metal box for fear of what it might contain.
