This time, seven members of the jury decide which filmmakers will be awarded in the end. Who are you?

Berlin – At the Berlinale, the international jury decides which film teams will be awarded the Silver Bear and the Golden Bear. These are the seven members this year:

M. Night Shyamalan (South Asia/USA) – The director made his breakthrough with his horror thriller “The Sixth Sense” in the late 1990s. The 51-year-old is now President of the Berlinale Jury. Well known is Shyamalan, who also writes screenplays and produces films himself, including for the horror film “The Visit” as well as “Split” and “Glass”.

Anne Zohra Berrached (Germany) – The director, who was born in Erfurt, was already represented with a film in the competition: In “24 weeks” she tells of a late abortion. In 2021, her drama “The world will be different” ran in a side section. In it she deals with Islamist radicalization.

Tsitsi Dangarembga (Zimbabwe) – The 63-year-old is a writer and filmmaker. In autumn she was honored with the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Dangarembga published her debut novel Nervous Conditions in 1988 as the first part of an autobiographical trilogy. She later studied film directing in Berlin.

Connie Nielsen (Denmark/USA) – The actress has appeared in a number of blockbuster movies, including ‘Wonder Woman,’ ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League,’ and Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator.’ She also starred in Mission to Mars and Basic and had a role in Lars von Trier’s drama Nymphomaniac.

Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Japan) – The director was in the Berlinale competition for the first time in 2021 – and his anthology film “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” received the Grand Jury Prize. He is now in the running for the Oscar with his new film – “Drive my Car” is based on a short story by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami.

Karim Aïnouz (Brazil/Algeria) – Originally he studied architecture, then he decided to do film. With “Praia do Futuro” he once took part in the competition at the Berlinale. He shot the documentary “Zentralflughafen THF” about refugees at the disused airport in Berlin-Tempelhof and received the main prize in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes in 2019 for “The Longing of the Gusmão Sisters”.

Saïd Ben Saïd (France/Tunisia) – According to the Berlinale, the film producer has produced around 40 films. These include directing work by Paul Verhoeven (“Elle”, “Benedetta”), David Cronenberg (“Maps to the Stars”) and Roman Polanski (“The God of Carnage”). For example, he also produced the film that won the 2019 Golden Bear: “Synonymes” (“Synonyms”) by Israeli director Nadav Lapid. dpa
