Beware of sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder characterized by a collapse in the upper airways while a person sleeps. Loud snoring may be a symptom, but what shows the difference is aseries of brief breaks in breathingDuring the dream.

The Naresh Punjabi team of Johns Hopkins University and his team studied 6,400 men and women over an eight-year interval. Those who started with severe sleep apnea were 46 percent more likely to die from any cause, regardless of age, sex, race, weight or smoking, the authors report in the journal PLoS Medicine. In addition, men ages 40 to 70 with severe respiratory disorder were twice as likely to die from any reason than men of the same age but without the respiratory problem.

According to another study carried out by Spanish experts and collected in the book “Sleep Medicine”, in our country the most frequent sleep disorder is insomnia (20% of the population), followed by sleep apnea syndrome, suffered by between 3 and 5% of people between the ages of 40 and 60.
