Bezzecchi: "It's a bit early to start making comparisons"

Double debut in the queen category of motorcycling, on the one hand the new formation led by Valentino Rossi, in the Mooney VR46, which takes the places of the now defunct Avintia, and on the other the young Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi , who will be one of the five rookies that this course debut in MotoGP.

Bezzecchi finished sixth this Monday in the first session of the shakedown test held in Sepang reserved for test drivers and rookies, more than 1.1 seconds behind the Spaniard Raúl Fernández.

For the Italian, who completed 38 laps, this first day has focused on testing and taking the pulse of the 2021 Ducati, the same bike with which Pecco Bagnaia was fighting for the championship practically until the end last year.

“It was a good day, in general I felt good on the bike, I liked the Ducati. I haven’t done many laps because there are many days of work ahead of us and I want to preserve my energy a bit, especially for when I arrive the official test with all the drivers”, which will be on February 5 and 6.

“But we have been able to test some things that we couldn’t test in Jerez and the feeling has been positive.”

One of the points that Bezzechi has focused on the most is the position on the bike.

“We have worked on the position, a very important aspect with the Ducati. I have talked a lot about it with Luca (Marini, who will be his partner) during the winter, because he had quite a few problems last year about it, so I want to be sure. that I adopt the correct position on the bike”, he explained.

“Ducati also wanted me to do some tests that were pending in the November test in Jerez, tomorrow I still don’t know what we are going to do, but the most important thing is to go around and make the feeling with the bike grow”

Bezzecchi wanted to downplay the result of this first day and the distance with Fernández.

“Being only the first day of testing, I think it’s a bit early to make comparisons. Today I only thought about carrying out the work program that we had planned with the team and I have not paid much attention to what the others have done. During the season will be different, but for now I don’t want to pay much attention to the rest”, he valued.

The 23-year-old rider was “impressed” by MotoGP at the Jerez test, a feeling that is still evident after this first day.

“The bike is impressive, very fast, although I must say that it surprised me a little less compared to Jerez, which was my first time and it was a narrower track. But here the speed is clearly higher, I think it was close to 335 km /h, or maybe more,” he said.

Physically, Bezzechi has been able to withstand the stifling heat, seasoned with extreme humidity.

“We have done a good job with my trainer during the winter, but it is only the first day, we have to wait to see what happens as the days go by to see where we are physically. It was very hot and the bike requires you to do a lot of strength, but it was something that was waiting for me, so it didn’t surprise me”, settled the boy from Rimini.
