The largest city in the conservative state of Alabama, Birmingham (metro population 1.2 million) is also home to the highest concentration of LGBT residents and gay and lesbian bars and related businesses in the state. Each year, beginning in early June, the city hosts the Central Alabama Pride Celebration, now in its 38th year. This year’s dates are June 4-12. The festivities include a variety of parties, events, and celebrations known as the “8 Days of Pride,” culminating in a Gay Pride Parade on Saturday, June 11.

Birmingham Gay Resources

Many local LGBT friendly businesses are especially busy on Pride weekend. Definitely make sure to stop by some of the popular gay bars in the city, such as Our Place (2115 7th Ave. S, 205-715-0077), the 24/7 Quest gay dance club (416 24th St. S, 205- 251-4313) and Al’s friendly at 7ma (2627 7th Ave. S, 205-321-2812). Considering the size of the city, Birmingham has a surprisingly lively gay scene. For tips on how to visit the area, take a look at the excellent site produced by the city’s official tourism organization, the Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau.
