Brundle proposes that Verstappen and Hamilton share the title

From Great Britain they have not accepted anything well that Lewis Hamilton was finally dethroned after years of overwhelming dominance during the hybrid era. The main media related to the seven-time champion cried out against the race director’s decisions at the end of the Abu Dhabi GP, calling it a “great robbery”.

In fact, Mercedes did not accept the defeat with sportsmanship either, and presented its intention to appeal, something that it has not yet executed and that it is still analyzing (they have until Thursday night to do so).

The last to talk about what happened was Martin Brundle, who in his role as Formula 1 analyst, and far from wanting to detract from Max Verstappen, proposed that the 2021 World Cup be shared and that both rivals appear as champions.

Obviously that has never happened in history, and in fact F1 has very clear regulations when it comes to breaking the tie for possible equal points. But Brundle thinks that, after such a close season, it would be a good idea.

“Does Max deserve the championship? Of course he does,” Brundle wrote in his regular column for Sky .

“He led 652 laps compared to 303 for Lewis. He started 15 of the 22 races leading the championship, including the last seven. He won 10 races to eight for Lewis (yes I know, we’ll get to that shortly), and there were 18 podiums compared to 17”.

“And he didn’t have the best of luck on the road…until the last few miles, of course.”

“Lewis would have deserved his eighth title too, I wish they could share it, to be honest.”

“His raw speed, consistency, determination, style, class and stamina, especially in the final grands prix, was outstanding, and he delivered another spectacular start in his 288th career at close to 37 years old.”

Brundle considers that Formula 1 was not done a good favor with what happened in the last laps at Yas Marina.

“The last few laps in Abu Dhabi, when the eyes of the world were on us (F1) with staggering numbers of viewers, was not the best of times and some things have to change this winter. We certainly confused our fans on Sunday.”

Without proposing anything, but simply giving his opinion on what happened, Fernando Alonso also mentioned the option of ‘splitting the trophy in two’.

“If you take all 22 races, either one of them could be world champion,” said the Spaniard from Alpine.

“I think more than any other year, if you could split the trophy in two, this would be the year to do it. Because they were both outstanding.”

But Alonso had also made it clear on Thursday that Verstappen was “one step ahead of the rest”, admitting that Mercedes had the best car of the season.
