Can I get vaccinated against Covid if I want to get pregnant?

Since last December 27, when the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 began in Spain, the entire population continues to be immunized at a good rate and the focus is now on pregnant women, who are recommended to be vaccinated to avoid serious complications, and also in women seeking pregnancy.

The vaccines recommended for use in these groups are the messenger RNA vaccines designed by the companies Pfizer and BioNTech and the one by Moderna.

The Covid vaccine in pregnancy

At the beginning of vaccination, as the vaccines had not been tested in pregnant women in clinical trials, the recommendation was not routine vaccination in pregnant women, but the benefits and risks of vaccinating should be evaluated individually.

However, as we have learned the results of the studies carried out, and seeing that the vaccine is safe and effective both for the pregnant woman and for fetal development, the recommendation to vaccinate pregnant women in a generalized way and in fact the WHO has asked for priority for them.

If you are pregnant, you can get vaccinated, and in fact it is the most convenient, since a greater risk of severe Covid is observed in pregnant women. They are more likely to require admission to the ICU, mechanical ventilation and a higher risk of death compared to non-pregnant women, especially if there are risk factors such as obesity, age over 35 years, high blood pressure, diabetes or pre-eclampsia.

There has also been an increased risk of preterm birth, as well as developing pre-eclampsia and thrombotic events if the virus is contracted.

What if I plan to get pregnant in the next few months?

What if I want to get pregnant in the next few months? Despite rumors that have emerged, there is no evidence that the Covid vaccine causes infertility, so women who are trying to get pregnant do not need to avoid pregnancy after vaccination.

On the contrary, if you are looking for a pregnancy, it is advisable to be fully immunized to prevent serious complications in the case of contracting the virus.

If you are planning a pregnancy, it is advisable to complete the vaccination earlier.

How long to wait to find a pregnancy after applying the vaccine?

Months ago the authorities were more cautious when making recommendations, and suggested waiting two weeks after the administration (some even extended it to two months), but currently, based on what is known, it has been seen that this Has no sense.

Since Covid mRNA vaccines do not contain live virus, there is no recommended waiting period before becoming pregnant.

If the woman becomes pregnant, or is unknowingly pregnant when receiving the first dose, she must complete the vaccination schedule with the second dose of the corresponding vaccine in the indicated time.

If there is no contraindication for vaccination against COVID-19 in any trimester of pregnancy, there is less to do it before seeking pregnancy.

In fact, it is intended that pregnant women arrive fully vaccinated at the period of maximum risk of complications in case of COVID-19 infection, which would be at the end of the second trimester and the third trimester of pregnancy.
