The midterm elections, in which just over half of the voters in the country came to vote, leave a more balanced Congress. Something that the main chambers and business organizations of the country celebrate. The main call that union leaders and businessmen make to candidates and political parties is to respect the results of the electoral contest.

According to data from the National Electoral Institute (INE), more than 50% of the electoral roll went to the polls on June 6. A percentage of participation higher than that registered in the mid-term of 2015, when only 48% of voters went to the polls.

“Mexico is moving towards the consolidation of democratic culture because citizens already recognize the value of their vote to decide the direction (political and economic) of their municipalities, state and country,” said the president of Concanaco Servytur, José Manuel López Campos.

José Medina Mora, president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), mentioned that the preliminary results show a “real competition” for the different positions of popular election and celebrated that there is political competition. “This is part of the democratic normality of Mexico,” he said.

Also the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry and the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors, the two chambers that group vehicle manufacturers and their distributors, celebrated “the high participation of citizens” in the midterm elections and the party balance in the Chamber of Deputies.

“We welcome that there is an advance in the role of the Chamber of Deputies in its function of controlling the actions of the Executive … that there is not a majority that allows modifying the Constitution without the need to listen to the other forces represented in Congress. “Guillermo Rosales, deputy general director of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors, said in a conference.

Entrepreneurs ask to respect results and resolve disputes through institutional channels

The Business Coordinating Council (CCE), which groups 12 organizations including the National Association of Self-service and Department Stores, and the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions, invited to “leave behind the natural political differences of a contest” to “add actions ”To guarantee favorable environments for social coexistence.

“The challenges facing the country require responsible cooperation, as well as the construction of consensus that allows us to continue advancing in unity, with environments of conciliation and respect for the institutions,” said Carlos Salazar, president of the CCE, through a statement.

José Medina Mora, from Coparmex, called on all political actors to recognize the electoral results and to resolve any controversy through institutional channels. “The citizens have already done their job, now it is up to the political parties and their candidates to resolve complaints and challenges with civility and resorting to the electoral courts so that they are the ones to resolve in accordance with the law,” he said.

Work as a team to achieve economic recovery

The businessmen assure that they will continue working with the federal government, with the new legislature, with the judiciary, and with state and municipal authorities to build “bridges of collaboration” and boost investment in the country.

“The agenda of the automotive industry is not modified by the changes in the Chamber of Deputies. The issues will remain the same and our approach will continue in the way that we have been doing, ”said Fausto Cuevas, director of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry.

Among the challenges that businessmen and union leaders see ahead are progress in the vaccination plan against COVID-19, economic recovery, job creation and the generation of a climate of certainty for investors.
