Berlin – German cinemas sold significantly fewer tickets than usual in the second year of the pandemic. According to data from an industry analysis service, around 40.4 million tickets were sold last year. This was announced by the association HDF cinema and the association of film distributors (VdF).
That was 18 percent more cards than the provider’s comparative figures for 2020. Compared to the last regular year, 2019, they had to accept a decline of 63 percent.
Because of the spread of the corona virus, the cinemas were initially closed for months – many opened again in the summer. In some regions, movie theaters are now closed again, while access rules apply elsewhere. “Unfortunately, after the good reopening on July 1, the cinemas were slowed down again in many places in the second half of the year,” said the CEO of HDF Kino, Christine Berg, on Friday.
Many viewers were particularly interested in the new James Bond film No Time to Die. In the meantime, around six million people had seen it in the cinema, the statement said. The new “Spider-Man” film “No Way Home” has now been watched by around three million people. The associations rely on data from the industry analysis service.
