Is there a white Christmas this year? Anything is possible, said a spokesman for the German Weather Service.

Offenbach – A few days before Christmas the weather turns wintry in Germany. After the high “Zafira” retreats over the North Sea on Sunday, the way is free for cold polar air from the north, announced the German Weather Service (DWD).

It is uncertain whether snow will fall in Germany at Christmas. “Everything is possible,” said a DWD spokesman.

On Sunday, the cloud cover in the south of Germany will initially loosen, in the rest of the republic there will be fog or rain. Maximum temperatures on the fourth of Advent are between three and nine degrees, at the sea and in the mountains it will be stormy, according to the weather service.

At night, rain or snow falls in the southeast, otherwise it mostly stays dry with temperatures between two and minus three degrees. According to the meteorologists, Monday will be changeable with clouds, especially between the Baltic Sea and the Ore Mountains, where light snow showers can be expected. This also applies to the extreme southwest and the south. The maximum temperatures are likely to be between two and seven degrees, with the highest values on the Rhine.

On Tuesday night, according to the DWD, light frost forms at temperatures between minus one and minus eight degrees. The day should be sunny and dry in many areas. In the north, thick clouds could come in, and rain or snow could fall, especially in the extreme south. The temperature is between zero and four degrees. At night it gets cooler with values between one and minus eight degrees.

In the coming days, cool polar air and mild sea air will meet, according to the DWD. Whether and how much snow falls on the Christmas holidays depends on where the boundary between the currents will run. dpa
