Companies put their future at risk by not having a defined cybersecurity

Last year, during the pandemic, cybercrime increased its activities in the country, crimes such as abusive access to the computer system increased and the figure reached 5,584 reported cases, says the Cybernetic Center of the police, according to the SIA report.

Teleworking has multiplied the risk of cyber attacks in a scenario where electronic commerce is growing exponentially, warns the report on Digital Maturity, focused on cybersecurity and prepared by Minsait and SIA, Indra companies. The report was made from personal interviews with heads of a hundred of the main companies in 15 sectors of activity, and some experts in cybersecurity in the world.

The sampling indicates that 56% of companies lack a well-defined cybersecurity strategy and are far from complying with the Digitally Protected Organization model. This situation jeopardizes its viability and its future in the digital age.

73% of those surveyed say that companies do not have the necessary incentive, training and communication mechanisms for their professionals and 90% of companies have not incorporated profiles of professionals specialized in cybersecurity, the survey says.

The study warns that the situation of cyberattacks becomes more serious when most of the attacks use some social engineering technique to break the defenses of companies and that, during the pandemic, phishing attacks (data theft) have been shot 6,000%. “Half of the companies have not yet incorporated cybersecurity into their agendas and give it a purely tactical treatment, focusing on the acquisition of tools and forgetting decisive aspects such as culture, processes and people,” says Luis Álvarez, CEO of SIA.

Crimes such as abusive access to the computer system increased and the number reached 5,584 reported cases; interception of computer data 1,231; 4,353 website spoofing, in this case the increase amounted to 358%; non-consensual transfer of assets 2,632; theft by computer and similar means 13,212 and computer damage 507, among other cyberattacks.

The report by the SIA firm points out that the platforms of public administration entities neither escape these attacks nor have they been able to prevent the use of their name to commit crimes, such as sending false emails. Criminals have managed to get officials to download files (malware) that allow them to access computers and information.

Banking, telecommunications, insurance and energy companies stand out for their high degree of advancement, investment in new technologies and search for innovative responses to cybersecurity challenges, highlights the SIA study.

The firm recommends that companies should consider cybersecurity as part of their good governance policy, but this situation is far from being achieved.
