The numbers never lie, so in some business or personal balance sheets you try to mask or hide the real figures. And in that the DIAN, for example, has a kind of lie detector.

In soccer, numbers are more difficult to manipulate when it comes to results on a playing field. For our teams, the Copa Libertadores phase left a bitter taste. One more element that joins the anxiety and fear that we live these days in all aspects of life. Two teams, Junior and America, received a lesser prize: to be able to continue in the South American Cup, one notch below the Libertadores, just a consolation prize.

For Nacional and Santa Fe it was a painful test; Nacional, called to stand out for its expensive makeup, was ranked last in its group, just like Santa Fe.

If we go to the performance percentages, the four Colombian teams only obtained 26% of the points, played in 24 games. We barely beat the Peruvian cadres, who got 22% of the points at stake, while the Bolivian representatives beat us with 36%. We are not at the bottom of the table of points thanks to Peru, whose representatives were worse than ours

To all these, Brazil reached 64% and Argentina 61%. The numbers don’t lie.

It is evident that we have a football in pajamas, from home. Instead of drying tears, the leaders, who understand not so much numbers, but weights, should in one of those many virtual meetings, where they end up holding on to the wicks, make a serious reflection: Where are we going? We continue to play those short tournaments, in which winning, for various coaches, is not the priority. It is more important not to lose and that generates or incubates a fear in the players, who struggle to support themselves and pray to collect their fortnights.

However, and in this Cup it was patented, not for winning a lot (Junior and National players) achievements and titles are achieved.

It is necessary to self-criticize the managers, since some in good faith allow themselves to be deceived by unscrupulous businessmen, who describe non-existent technical benefits in their represented. I know all the apologies, especially economic ones, for not putting together serious teams or setting medium-term operating plans. But if the Copa Libertadores is the panacea to save the year in pesos, it is logical that they make the effort to convince their players to put all their desire, enthusiasm and application to score points. And I put aside the romanticism of “love for the shirt.” If they are professionals, they are for real.
