Corona vaccination in the USA: Biontech / Pfizer vaccine receives regular approval

After the corona vaccines had only received an emergency approval in the USA so far, the competent authority has now completed the review of the vaccine.

Silver Spring – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the drug from Biontech / Pfizer * full approval as the first corona vaccine *. It applies to people aged 16 and over, the FDA announced on Monday (23.08.2021) and called the decision a “milestone” in the fight against the pandemic. The emergency authorization for people aged twelve and over * will continue to exist.

The vaccine against the coronavirus * has been in use in the US since December with an emergency approval, in May Biontech and Pfizer applied for full approval. To do this, the FDA, which used an accelerated process, had to review about ten times as much data as for the emergency approval – including much that was gained from the massive use of the vaccine in the country in recent months.

Regular approval in the USA: Corona vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer receives full approval

According to the expectations of many experts, full approval could result in further vaccination obligations * – for example from city administrations, universities or health institutions, which wanted to wait for full approval for such a step for legal reasons, among other things. Apart from that, experts also hope that the vaccination campaign will be boosted, as many people who have not yet had themselves vaccinated stated in surveys that the lack of full approval was the reason for this. However, this could possibly only have been given as a pretext.

The vaccines from Moderna * and Johnson & Johnson * have also been used in the USA * for months on the basis of emergency approvals. Moderna applied for full approval from the FDA at the beginning of June, but has not yet submitted all the necessary documents. Johnson & Johnson plans to submit such an application later this year.
