The cost of the COVID-19 pandemic is close to being the most expensive in the history of the Mexican insurance industry.

As of June 21, insurance companies had paid $ 2.055 million in health and life insurance claims to people who suffered from the disease. The amount paid is $ 312 million below the most expensive catastrophe, Hurricane Wilma.

“We see that if this constant is maintained it will only be a matter of time and not a quarter, but more time to become the first of the catastrophes in the Insurance Sector in terms of indemnified amounts,” said Edgar Karam, vice president of the TO MY.

The average amount paid by insurers in medical expenses for COVID cases in the country amounts to 488,570 pesos and the most expensive case attended adds up to 30.8 million pesos.

In addition, AMIS has detected that there is an increase in claims in the southern area, a region where few cases of the disease had been registered. Yucatán and Tabasco have more than 100 cases with insurance claims for major medical expenses.

Norma Alicia Rosas, general director of AMIS, commented that in general, the health sector has detected more cases in young people but that the insurance industry has not detected this rebound due to the fact that there is a low penetration of insurance in the range of 20 to 39 years of age.

The directive stressed that as the sector of the younger population begins to be vaccinated, low levels of contagion may be seen.

The AMIS said that at the moment they do not appreciate a third wave of infections in COVID cases because the trend has stabilized in the number of deaths and those infected by the disease.

“If we compare it against the first quarter of 2021, of course the number of deaths and the number of infections has decreased, but a free fall of patients from COVID or deaths has not yet been seen, but we maintain as a constant, like we’ve gotten stuck at a percentage, “added Karam.
