Crown Princess Mary fails because of the Danish language: Funny anecdote

Crown Princess Mary is the all-purpose weapon of the Danish Royals. Queen Margrethe II (81) thinks highly of her daughter-in-law* and the wife of Crown Prince Frederik (53) is also extremely popular with the people. So it’s no wonder that Mary’s 50th birthday has almost become a national holiday. Countless congratulations from all over the world came to Amalienborg Palace*. A book of unseen photos* was also published in Mary’s honour, a new portrait of the Crown Princess was unveiled and a major special about her life was aired on Danish TV.

The four children of the 50-year-old also had their say in the show and surprised the viewers with insights into their everyday family life. Prince Vincent (11) and Princess Isabella (14) caused a laugh with a private detail.

Crown Princess Mary fails at Danish – much to her family’s amusement

Crown Princess Mary* was born in Tasmania and grew up speaking English as her mother tongue. Even though she speaks fluent Danish after more than 20 years at the royal court, a few words apparently still cause her difficulties at times – much to the amusement of her children.

“She has an Australian accent, so there are some words that she says a little funny,” Billed Bladet quoted Princess Isabella* from the TV interview. Especially when pronouncing the supposedly simple terms “little” and “apple” it is noticeable that Mary is not a native speaker, added Prince Vincent*. “Then we all tease her that she can’t pronounce it properly. She then just says, ‘Yes, yes, yes, I’ve said it correctly enough,'” says Isabella.
