Darryn Binder, triple somersault without a net: "I couldn't turn it down"

The youngest of the Binder brothers will compete this weekend in Misano for his 115th Grand Prix in the Moto3 World Championship, in which he made his debut in 2015 from the Red Bull Rookies Cup . Since then, the South African has accumulated six podium finishes with a single victory, the one achieved last year at the Catalunya Grand Prix , a meager background for a rider who will turn 24 next January and who has never been fighting for a championship.

Despite this weak business card, the new RNF Racing team, refounded from the current Petronas SRT and which yesterday announced an agreement with Yamaha to be its satellite team next year, has opted for Binder, who will perform a triple somersault without network, moving from Moto3 to MotoGP in 2022 with a one-season contract partnering Andrea Dovizioso.

“It really seems unreal right now, I feel like I’m in a different world,” admitted Binder himself on Thursday, included at the last moment in the official press conference prior to the San Marino Grand Prix .

“It is a childhood dream to race in MotoGP, not everyone has this opportunity and I definitely never expected to do it coming directly from Moto3,” he acknowledged.

The last precedent of a rider making the jump from the small class to the highest category was carried out by Jack Miller , who in 2015 was promoted to MotoGP after having fought until the end the previous year to be Moto3 world champion, with six victories and 10 podiums, a list of winners very different from that of Binder.

Despite this, the South African is confident that the change in category and a bigger bike can work for him, and he is focused only on enjoying the opportunity.

“I’m super excited, it’s a big step forward so it’s going to be a really big learning curve for me but I’m ready to work as hard as I can and it all starts at the end of the year when I first get in the M1. ”.

“Personally I feel like I’ve been in Moto3 for too long, I’m quite big (1.75m), so I feel like my size should suit MotoGP a bit better.

As surprising as the signing of Binder to the Yamaha satellite line-up may seem, what is clear is that the rider has simply taken the train that passed by his door.

“It’s definitely an opportunity that you just can’t turn down, that’s a no-brainer for me, I didn’t have to think about it too much, in fact I didn’t think about it for a second.”

With Darryn’s arrival in MotoGP, he will join his older brother, Brad Binder , Moto3 champion in 2016 and Moto2 runner-up in 2019 before making the leap to the premier class, where he has already accumulated two victories with KTM.

“I will definitely ask my brother a lot of questions, I will not stop asking him, that’s for sure, and I will try to follow his footsteps very closely during the holidays to train and try to prepare to race with a bigger bike”, settled the surprising new rider. from Yamaha.
