The British Essex County Police have confirmed the death of the Conservative MP David Amess , 69, after receiving several stab wounds this Friday during a meeting this afternoon with the voters of his constituency in Leigh-on-Sea. The attack took place in a Methodist church , during an encounter that was interrupted by a 25-year-old man armed with a knife and who has already been arrested.

The security forces have arrested a 25-year-old man, the main suspect in the murder of the British deputy, according to the police statement published on his Twitter account. Amess was a very strong parliamentarian in defense of Brexit. She had five children and was against abortion and gay marriage.

The parliamentarians of the House of Commons usually hold the so-called surgeries every week, sessions with the voters of their particular constituency in which they attend to complaints or petitions.

Just before a similar forum, 41-year-old Labor MP Jo Cox was assassinated in June 2016. The author of the crime, Thomas Mair, linked to the extreme right and with mental problems, was sentenced to life imprisonment at the end of that same year.

Cox was the first British lawmaker to be assassinated during her tenure since 1990, when Conservative Ian Gow was killed in a car bomb attack claimed by the IRA.

Gow, a former adviser to Prime Minister Margaret Tatcher , died at the age of 53 in an attack in the English town of Sussex. Before him, the IRA had also assassinated Congressman Anthony Berry, in the 1984 attack on a hotel where Thatcher was also staying.
