Day of the Dead / Los Días de los Muertos is a Mexican custom that honors and remembers those who have died. The celebration begins at midnight on October 31, Halloween night in the US The following events will be held in honor of Dia de los Muertos in the Washington, DC area:

Day of the Dead Family National Museum of the American Indian – October 30-November 1, 2016. 4th St. and Independence Ave., SW. Washington DC. The family event will feature a concert, talks and demonstrations that celebrate everyday images of Mexican American life.

Additional activities include culinary demonstrations from the museum’s Mitsitam Native Foods Café and a cultural dance performance.

Day of the Dead Festival – November 4, 2016, from 8:30 pm to midnight. Centro Cultural Mexicano, Embassy of Mexico, 2829 16th Street, NW Washington DC. Experience a world filled with the wonders of Mayan legends and the beautiful beaches of Cancun as we celebrate the holidays with our unique international flair. With Mexican food, open bar, alteration and ceremony of the Day of the Dead, mariachi music, presentation and dance classes of the Day of the Dead, costume contest, night DJ, art gallery, cinema and much more.

Smithsonian Day of the Dead (Virtual) : The website features activities that celebrate this popular Latin American holiday. This year’s Day of the Dead festival will feature offerings for the late Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, actress Lupe Ontiveros and artist Carlos Alonzo. Visitors will have the opportunity to tweet messages and offers during the ceremony, which will be delivered in the Nagual language.

Mexican Restaurants in the Washington DC Area – Local restaurants celebrate Dia de los Muertos with specialty food and drink.
