Donald Trump wants to go back to Youtube – and goes to court

Because of the spread of false reports, Donald Trump was blocked by many portals. Now the former US president is taking legal action.

West Palm Beach – Former US President Donald Trump wants to take legal action against the Internet giants after his official channels on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube have been blocked. Now he is said to have applied for an injunction against the video platform and Google subsidiary Youtube at a court in Florida and announced similar steps against Facebook and Twitter. The New York Post reports.

The lawyers of the ex-president justified the move by saying that the platform ban would mean irreparable damage to Trump’s political future as well as to the entire Republican Party. The US paper quotes from court documents from Monday (23.8.2021), which the editors have. A particular disadvantage for Trump is that he cannot sell any merchandise on YouTube – a potential damage to the fundraising campaign that is supposed to enable Trump’s political projects. The 75-year-old has not yet commented on rumors as to whether Trump is available as a Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

Because the ex-president wants to reach a larger audience again, Trump is now going to court.

Donald Trump vs. Youtube: Violation of the right to freedom of expression?

The reason for the lawsuit that Trump had filed against the three Internet companies was the restriction of his civil rights and especially the right to freedom of expression, which are enshrined in the first amendment to the US Constitution. When Trump announced the legal action, he said, according to the New York Post, that the lawsuit could amount to “trillions” of dollars.

Facebook and Twitter blocked Trump in January shortly before the end of his term in office. The trigger was the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of Trump – and that he expressed sympathy for the attackers. He also continues to claim, without any evidence, that his November presidential election victory was stolen by fraud. With that he heated up the mood in the country. Until then, Twitter was the 75-year-old’s most important means of communication. (ska / dpa)
