Dorna reaches an agreement with Suzuki for his departure from the MotoGP World Championship

0

In a maneuver that took all the members of the team by surprise, and which was precipitated after the Spanish Grand Prix , at the beginning of May, the Hamamatsu constructor communicated to his troops his intention to close the MotoGP division at the end of the this course, only two after having been proclaimed world champion with Joan Mir (2020).

The impulse also caught Dorna behind the scenes, which reacted by alerting the manufacturer of the commitments it had made a few months earlier, through a contract that linked it to the event until 2026.

Despite this, Carmelo Ezpeleta , Dorna’s highest-ranking executive, always maintained his intention not to retain a brand that does not want to be part of the World Cup, even though Suzuki’s goodbye was obviously subject to an agreement that , as Motorsport.com understands, depended on some kind of compensation.

The note sent by the Japanese company this Wednesday confirms that this agreement has been reached, so that Suzuki has a free hand to leave.

“Suzuki Motor Corporation and Dorna have reached an agreement to terminate Suzuki’s partition in MotoGP at the end of 2022,” reads the statement, which also reports the departure of the factory team that competes in the World Endurance Championship (EWC).

In any case, Suzuki reiterates its intention to remain committed to the championship until the end of the course: “We will continue to race in 2022 in both MotoGP and EWC, maintaining our maximum level of effort to win races.”

Tohihiro Suzuki , president of the holding company, highlights the reason that a few months ago led the leadership that he directs to take this surprising change in direction.

“Suzuki has decided to close its stage in MotoGP and in EWC, with the intention of focusing its resources on other sustainable initiatives”, declares the executive.

While most of the engineers and technicians are looking for a place in one of the other paddock workshops, everything is ready for Joan Mir and Alex Rins to confirm their arrival at Honda in the near future.

Honda is expected to confirm the arrival of Alex Rins at LCR during the summer break, before doing the same with Joan Mir, who will become Marc Márquez’s partner in the official team.
