Dorna Sports, the Spanish company that promotes the MotoGP world championship, has issued an official statement this Tuesday reacting to the information advanced by Motorsport.com on Monday afternoon, regarding Suzuki’s departure from the championship at the end of the year.

“Following recent rumors about Suzuki leaving MotoGP at the end of 2022, Dorna Sports has officially contacted the factory to remind them that the conditions of their contract to race in MotoGP do not allow them to make this decision unilaterally.” , the sent note begins, recalling that the Hamamatsu brand signed a five-year contract last year to stay in the queen class until the end of 2026, of which it has only completed the first (2022).

A decision that has already been made firmly and that cannot be reversed.

“However, in case Suzuki leaves after an agreement between both parties, Dorna will decide the ideal number of riders and teams that will race in the MotoGP class from 2023,” he continues.

The promoters of the championship want to reassure the rumors that have been triggered in recent hours as a result of the departure of Suzuki, in the sense that the 2023 grid could be minimized.

“Dorna continues to receive a high level of interest from a number of factory works and independent teams looking to join the MotoGP grid, as the sport continues to be a global example of close competition, innovation and entertainment, reaching hundreds of millions of fans. fans around the world,” says the promoter.

“The interest of these parties has been reconfirmed in the last 24 hours,” concludes Dorna’s official note.

Currently six manufacturers have a contract with Dorna to compete in MotoGP: Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, KTM, Aprilia and Suzuki itself, with a total of twelve teams, with eight Ducati on the grid, along with four Honda, four KTM, four Yamaha, two Aprilias and as many Suzukis, a total of 24 units, which is the maximum number established by the promoters, and which they will now try to maintain with novelties that, at the moment, are unknown, especially at the level of new factories.
