Down to minus 15 degrees: the onset of winter in Ukraine is affecting the population and troops

0

Due to the Russian invasion and the destruction in Ukraine, many people lack heating and electricity. Winter is about to return right now.

Kyiv/Wiesbaden – After the storms that caused great damage*, the long-awaited spring in Germany will make its debut in 2022. The cold air at high altitude that was initially forecast did not materialise. Instead, it will get warmer and warmer from the middle of the week. At the weekend, the temperatures should even reach up to 17 degrees, forecast meteorologist Dominik Jung to wetter.net.

However, the low is not gone, but hits Ukraine of all places. Between Thursday (March 10th, 2022) and Sunday (March 13th, 2022) down to minus 15 degrees are expected at night and during the day the temperatures should remain just below zero, so that ground frost is spreading. Since many Ukrainians currently have no functioning heating and often no electricity due to the escalating Ukraine conflict* and the war that is now raging, the frost could become an additional danger for them.

It’s supposed to be freezing in Ukraine. This affects both the civilian population and the fighting troops.

Onset of winter: Ukraine war is not the first battle involved

It is not the first time in history that the so-called “General Winter” has intervened in wars. The term refers to the cold Russian winters that drove foreign invaders out of Russia throughout history.

According to a report by Deutschlandfunk, the thaw after the harsh Russian onset of winter is said to have led to the Frenchman’s defeat at Napoleon’s battle on the Beresina River in November 1812. The harsh Russian winter also contributed to Hitler’s defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad.

The cold snap could become a stress test not only for the Ukrainians who are stuck in their homes without heating and the people fleeing, but also for the fighting troops. The soldiers fight outdoors, leaving them vulnerable to the weather. In addition, according to the meteorologist Jung, the “strong east wind” makes the perceived temperatures drop to as low as minus 20 degrees. (Monja Stolz) *hna.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
