Drinking a couple of coffees and teas a day could reduce the risk of stroke and dementia

0

Researchers at Tianjin Medical University (China) followed 500,000 Britons from the UK Biobank Study (aged 50-74 years) for more than a decade, monitoring their health and intake of hot drinks. Participants who drank two coffees and two teas a day were one-third less likely to have a stroke, the results showed. And their chances of developing dementia were 28% lower.

The experts led by Yuan Zhang admitted that the findings could have been the result of chance , insisting that the clearest link was for numerous hot drinks and not just drinking one of them.

“Our findings suggested that moderate coffee / tea consumption alone or in combination was associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia,” the authors write in PLoS Medicine.

The participants were followed up between 2006 and 2010. The volunteers were not asked whether they added milk or sugar to their drinks. They simply compared those who drank coffee and tea with those who did not.

Many studies have previously suggested that coffee and tea might reduce the risk of dementia, but others have warned that excessive consumption of these beverages could actually increase the risk.
