An earthquake occurs in the eastern Mediterranean. The effects are felt in several countries.
Nicosia – Cyprus was hit by an earthquake. The European earthquake monitoring station ESMC stated the strength of the quake on Tuesday morning (January 11th, 2022) as 6.5. Accordingly, the center was around 120 kilometers northwest of Limassol, at a depth of 51 kilometers. The news agencies dpa and AFP report unanimously.
The earthquake wreaked havoc on the island: Thousands of people spent the night on Tuesday outside because they were afraid of houses collapsing.

As reported by the Cypriot radio, the earthquake struck around 2 a.m. Accordingly, the effects of the tremor were also felt in southern Turkey, in Egypt and on the Greek islands of Crete and Rhodes. The island of Crete was also hit by an earthquake at the end of October.

“There is no information about significant damage or casualties,” said the spokeswoman for the Cypriot civil defense, Olivia Michailidou, on the state radio on Tuesday morning. (do)
