Sad balance: five people are killed and several are injured. Among other things, they were hit by falling parts of the building.

Manila – After the severe earthquake in the north of the Philippines, the number of injured has risen to more than 130. At least five people died yesterday in the magnitude 7 earthquake, according to civil protection in the Southeast Asian island nation.

The epicenter was in the province of Abra in the north of the island of Luzon. The region is 335 kilometers north of the capital Manila.

The new President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. traveled to the earthquake area and spoke to those affected. Because of numerous aftershocks, many residents had spent the night outdoors.

Most of the dead and injured were hit by falling parts of buildings, landslides and falling rocks. According to the authorities, almost 13,000 people are affected by the consequences of the earthquake, which also damaged schools, hospitals, roads and bridges. The tremors were felt even in faraway Manila.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire – the most geologically active zone on earth. The last violent 7.1 magnitude earthquake in 2013 killed 220 people in the center of the country. In July 1990, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 2,400 people on the island of Luzon. dpa
