Elizabeth II: Queen made her marriage to Prince Philip conditional

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had a scandal-free marriage for over 70 years. But very few people know that their marriage was subject to a condition imposed by the regent.

London – Before the yes word came in November 1947, the Duke of Edinburgh (99, † 2021) had to make a sacrifice. It was the Queen’s explicit wish for her future husband that she had made a condition. Author Bryan Kozlowski recounts Phlip’s decision in his book Long Live the Queen!

In retrospect, Prince Philip’s* reaction to Queen Elizabeth II’s ultimatum* (95) can be seen as a crucible of his life in the background at the side of the regent. With his marriage, the attractive 26-year-old Prince of Greece decided to live in the shadow of the head of the British crown. Among other things, he had to give up his promising military career and his title for his then 21-year-old blue-blooded girlfriend.

Queen Elizabeth II’s marriage to Prince Philip was conditional

Kozlowski’s book is subtitled ’13 Rules of Life from Britain’s Longest-Reigning Monarch*’. One of them was apparently the regent’s request to her fiancé Philip to give up smoking. As the author reports, the young monarch was not bothered by the smell of the blue haze, the reason was deeper. Her beloved father, King George VI. (56, † 1952) died of lung cancer after a long illness. He is said to have been a heavy chain smoker for years. Even today, the regent commemorates the events surrounding the anniversary of his death* every year in Sandringham.
