Speaking to TED conference boss Chris Anderson , billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk outlined his plan for Mars, our neighboring red planet. One of the claims he made was that Mars won’t be for the faint of heart and that, at least initially, “it won’t be fancy.” Future settlers must be prepared for a difficult and cramped environment and a lot of hard work.
The richest man in the world has expressed his goal of making humanity a multi-planetary species, including developing rockets to colonize Mars by 2050 .
Musk estimates that a one-way ticket to the Red Planet will cost the first generation of colonists about $100,000 , which is “relatively affordable for most people.”
In his statements, Musk has frequently supported the settlement of humans on different planets in the solar system. However, he did not share much information about his mission to Mars. Be that as it may, it is believed that at the end of this decade, SpaceX could kick off its mission to settle humans on Mars.
The surface of Mars is rugged, with several volcanoes and canyons. The planet’s gravity is about one-third that of Earth’s, and its atmosphere is too thin for humans to breathe normally. Without the necessary equipment, any person would die in just a few minutes , due to the low air pressure of the planet.
The CEO of SpaceX calculates that approximately one million people would be needed to build a self-sustaining city. Musk’s plan is to have a full-size, self-sustaining city on the Red Planet, which will require about a million tons of cargo. The entire process would cost between $100 billion and $10 trillion, depending on the scale and how cheap each launch of the massive Starship rocket can get.
