Etna volcano in Sicily has erupted again. Lava and ash poured out of the crater. A great pillar of smoke rose far into the sky.
Catania – The Etna volcano in Sicily has been very active, especially in the past year. Spectacular eruptions occurred regularly. It was not until October 2021 that the 3,357 meter high Feuerberg spat out lava and ash. Now the volcano on the Italian island erupted again after a long break.
On Thursday evening (02/10/2022) the largest active volcano in Europe spat lava fountains, three streams of glowing rock flowed a few hundred meters down the mountain. A column of smoke of around 8000 meters rose into the sky, as announced by the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The institute also provided continuous information about the outbreak via Twitter. As early as 4 p.m. on Thursday, an intensification of activity at the southeast crater could be observed.

Photos also showed how a lava fountain shoots out of the crater and a large column of smoke rises far into the night sky. The volcanic eruption did not cause any major damage. According to the information, no more lava came out of the volcano on the Mediterranean island as early as Friday morning. However, an ash cloud continues to flow out of the crater.
Etna erupts again: No major damage reported
Operations at Catania airport at the foot of Mount Etna were not disrupted either. Etna had been very active in the past year. There were several outbreaks at once. In the surrounding villages and towns, it was mainly the ash that caused trouble and minor damage. Air traffic at Catania Airport also had to be interrupted again and again. No aircraft took off or landed there in the meantime.
