Young people have suffered many setbacks during the pandemic. The European Union therefore wants to put young people in the foreground next year.

Brussels – The EU makes 2022 the “European Year of Youth”. Specifically, for example, the participation of young people in the EU is to be improved in the coming year. In addition, events and other projects are to be devoted to the youth.

“Young people suffered a lot during the pandemic. A European Year of Youth would recognize their efforts to overcome the setbacks they have experienced ”, stated a communication from EU countries.

The result of negotiations between the EU Parliament and EU countries still has to be formally approved, but this is considered a matter of form. CDU European politician Sabine Verheyen said that Parliament had secured a minimum budget of eight million euros for the project. The youth policy spokeswoman for the SPD MEPs, Petra Kammerevert, reiterated the demand for a ban on unpaid internships, apprenticeships and apprenticeships.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had already announced in her State of the Union address that she wanted to proclaim 2022 the Year of European Youth. dpa
