Shortly after a convoy carrying President Arif Alvi drives through Sibi, Pakistan, a bomb explodes. Five people are killed in the attack.

Islamabad – A bomb attack in Pakistan has killed at least five people and injured 28 others. The bomb exploded near a police car shortly after a convoy with Pakistani President Arif Alvi drove through the location in the city of Sibi on Tuesday (March 8th, 2022), a local police officer told the German Press Agency. Alvi was in town to attend a cultural event. It was unclear on Tuesday afternoon whether the President was the target of the attack.

Attacks in Pakistan have increased since the militant Islamist Taliban took power in neighboring Afghanistan. In particular, the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) and the Pakistani Taliban claim attacks for themselves. It is not yet clear who is behind the bomb in Sibi.

Attack in Pakistan: IS attack on mosque in Peshawar

The bombing came just days after ISIS suicide bombers killed at least 63 people in an attack at a Shiite mosque in the city of Peshawar.

According to local media reports, a state of emergency has been declared in all state hospitals in the Balochistan capital and the staff has been put on alert. Some of the injured are in critical condition. Baluchistan Prime Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo condemned the incident. He described the bombing as an attempt to sabotage the annual festival and general peace in the province. (iwe/dpa)
