F1 – Ferrari believes Pérez should have been penalized twice

The end of the 2022 F1 Singapore Grand Prix was full of controversy and doubts due to a possible violation of the safety car regulations by Sergio Pérez, who was accused of leaving more than ten cars away from the vehicle in charge to keep the group compact.

The Mexican driver was forced to visit the FIA stewards to testify about the events, and when he left the room he confirmed to the DAZN microphones that there was “no problem” and that he could celebrate the victory with his team without worries.

However, this was not seen in the same way in the Ferrari garage, since his boss, Mattia Binotto , brought up an action for which one of the drivers related to those of the Prancing Horse , Antonio Giovinazzi, received a penalty for the same.

“We think that’s the infringement, the last time it happened I think it was Giovinazzi in 2020, who was penalized with five seconds, but we’re not there, we’re not going to go to the meeting with the stewards, so it’s difficult for us. judge”, said the person in charge of the Maranello team. “We’re just going to wait, and I hope I can change the final result today.”

In addition to explaining why what Sergio Pérez did would be a reason for a penalty, the Swiss commented on how the race of the most successful team in the history of Formula 1 was: “I think that, at the beginning, our start was not good, we lost a position and that has affected the rest of the race”.

“We could have made a better start and gotten a better result,” Binotto continued. “As for the start itself, I think Charles [Leclerc] reacted well to the lights, the car procedures worked, but then he skidded because he didn’t have enough grip.

That action is something that could cost Ferrari the victory, and from within the team they indicated that they will deal with the issue: ” We will review it, and I think that has affected the rest of the race, but second and third is still a good result. In terms of the constructors’ championship it’s been a good weekend.”

“The car has worked well, both dry and wet, yesterday in qualifying and today in the race, so we can be satisfied, because if we look back, in Spa and Zandvoort, it was more difficult,” acknowledged the boss of the Italians. “So I think we have solved some of the problems that we had and we have to wait for the decision of the stewards, which will be late.”

“I’m very curious to see it, there were two offenses behind the safety car, so it may be two penalties, but we can only trust what they decide,” said Mattia Binotto.

Asked if Charles Leclerc could have won the Marina Bay event by switching from one compound to another, he said: “I think in the end we’ve been quick to switch to slicks. We’ve been brave in being the first to change to the dry, between us and Checo [Pérez], I think we have gone well in the dry and in the wet, and that is the most positive thing about the weekend”.
