F1 – Great victory for Verstappen and feat for Alonso in Austin

0

In a race in which Carlos Sainz started from pole position, the objective of the Spanish driver of the Ferrari team was to achieve his victory in the highest category of motorsport, but in the end it could not be the case, since in the first few meters he lost the lead and a contact with George Russell in the first corner forced him to leave at the first change.

After that event, Max Verstappen was placed as the leader of the race, a leadership that he lost after a Red Bull Racing error in the pits that caused him to lose positions with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, whom he managed to get rid of relatively soon.

Overtaking the Mercedes driver cost him more, but on lap 50 of 56 and after a great battle on the track, the Dutch driver returned to the first position, the same one in which he would cross the checkered flag moments later to take over the victory of the United States GP 2022 of F1.

Behind Charles Leclerc savored a third podium position that tasted like glory after having started the race outside the points zone. Sergio Pérez was fourth and George Russell, well behind after serving his five second penalty for the incident with Sainz, finished fifth, with the fastest lap of the race after a late pit stop.

Fernando Alonso, after a shocking accident, achieved a feat by staying on track and climbing from last to sixth place, which he lost to Lando Norris in the final laps. He finally finished seventh, an unimaginable result when the Alpine driver collided with the rear of Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin and his car went flying.

Sebastian Vettel finished eighth after a heart-stopping finish against Kevin Magnussen, who was the only one to go to a single stop and that helped him to be ninth. Yuki Tsunoda, with his AlphaTauri, completed the top ten positions that award points.

Full race summary of the 2022 F1 US GP in Austin

Sainz loses the lead and leaves in the first meters of the race

The nineteenth race of the season started at the scheduled time and Carlos Sainz started from pole position, but the first position did not last long. The Spanish driver made a fairly regular start and Max Verstappen got ahead of him, but to make matters worse, Russell touched him from behind and made him spin, falling to the back of the peloton.

As if that were not enough, the man from Madrid suffered a puncture during the incident and some other damage to the car, forcing him to go into the pits to change tires, although the Ferrari mechanics made the decision to withdraw his F1-75.

With Verstappen in the lead, Hamilton moved into second, while Stroll took advantage of the chaos to move into third, ahead of a Russell who was under investigation for that incident with Sainz and ended up receiving a five-second penalty.

Vettel and Sainz also made great starts and were positioned fifth and sixth, ahead of Norris, Gasly, Leclerc and Albon, who closed the top ten places, with Alonso, the first driver with hard, twelfth, after having started fourteenth.

After the first few laps, Verstappen was pulling away in the lead and there would be a gap of almost three seconds over Hamilton, while Russell and Pérez overtook a Stroll who was creating a train in third position. The Mexican, after that maneuver, lost one of the two outer endplates of his front wing. Leclerc, meanwhile, continued to climb and was seventh, behind the Aston Martin.

The pit stops begin, Pérez looks for the podium and Alonso goes against it

Completed the tenth lap of the race, Verstappen began to open more space on Hamilton and the distance increased to four seconds, with a Pérez who, despite the lack of an important aerodynamic appendage, put pressure on Russell for the podium.

On lap 11, some of the drivers wearing the yellow tire (medium) started to pit, which put Alonso in tenth position, leading the pack of drivers on the hard compound, unlike most of the platoon.

Hamilton was the first of the leading drivers to pit to take off his media to ride the hard ones, returning to the track in seventh some 25 behind Verstappen in what was a clear undercut attempt. A lap later, the Dutchman did the same and returned to the asphalt second, just behind Pérez and with an advantage of almost five seconds over Hamilton.

Russell also stopped and served his five-second penalty, which dropped him to eighth place, behind an Alonso, who had gained positions thanks to the pitstops of his direct rivals. Thanks to those extra seconds of stopping, Pérez won the position from the Mercedes rider and placed himself on the virtual podium, with Russell himself on the lookout, five seconds behind, after overtaking the Spaniard, who was still on the track with his hard tires.

The safety car comes out onto the track; pit stop opportunity

On lap 18 of the race, Valtteri Bottas lost control of his Alfa Romeo and ended up stuck in the gravel, causing a safety car that was welcomed with open arms by all the drivers who had not yet made their pit stop.

Leclerc, who had come out of the top 10, was placed fourth with new hard, sandwiched between Pérez and Russell. Vettel, meanwhile, was positioned sixth, ahead of his teammate both with means, while Alonso was already ninth, also with means, ahead of Norris and Tsunoda.

Four laps later, the Safety Car returned to pit lane and Verstappen led with an iron hand a peloton in which there were practically no overtaking, except for an Alonso who overtook Gasly and placed eighth, behind the Aston Martin.

Strong accident with Alonso involved and new safety car

Alonso, trying to overtake Stroll for seventh position on the back straight, hit the rear of the Aston Martin due to a late move by the Canadian driver and the Spaniard’s car was thrown into the sky, landing violently and also impacting against the protections of the layout.

However, Alonso was able to return to the pits and return to the track in last position after changing the nose of his Alpine, while Stroll retired at the same moment of the accident due to damage to his AMR22 after hitting the protections.

Ahead, the positions remained stable, with Verstappen in the lead, followed by Hamilton, Pérez, Leclerc, Russell and Vettel. On lap 24, there were already three drivers who had been left out of the race: Sainz, Bottas and Stroll, all of them due to incidents on the track.

On lap 26, the race restarted for the second time and unlike the first restart, nobody took too many risks and there were no incidents, as well as no overtaking.

Verstappen and Hamilton escape while Leclerc fights for the podium

With the race beginning to stabilize after the chaos, Verstappen opened a gap of two seconds with respect to Hamilton, and behind Leclerc and Pérez they starred in a great battle for third position that, after several failed attempts, was won by Ferrari.

Further back, Vettel was sixth, in no man’s land, and Gasly, who was seventh closely followed by his teammate, Norris and Mick Schumacher, received a five-second penalty for breaking the Safety Car rules regarding the distance between the cars. Alonso, meanwhile, climbed to 12th place.

The second pit stops begin and Verstappen loses the lead

After seeing Yuki Tsunoda and Mick Schumacher open the window for the second pit stops, Hamilton was the first of the frontrunners to stop to throw another undercut at Verstappen.

A lap after the Dutchman entered the pits, like Leclerc and both Hamilton and the Monegasque driver gained position from Verstappen, who suffered a slow stop of about 11 seconds, something strange in Red Bull. In this way, Hamilton was placed as the virtual leader of the race, ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen, waiting for the second stops of Pérez, Russell and a Vettel who was on the podium at that time.

Behind and despite his shocking accident, Alonso was placed ninth, just behind his teammate Estaban Ocon, and ahead of an Alex Albon who could not keep up with his Williams.

Leclerc and Verstappen got into a big fight, reminiscent of earlier in the season, but that battle came to an end on the back straight when the Dutchman put the Monegasque ahead. That fight allowed Hamilton to open a gap and distance himself.

Verstappen looks for victory and Alonso continues with his feat

After overtaking Leclerc, the distance between Verstappen and Hamilton was five seconds, but the Red Bull driver, who had averages, began to cut time lap after lap to a Briton who, in addition to having a slower car, had the hard compound.

Alonso overtook Ocon and was placed seventh, behind Kevin Magnussen who still had to stop in the pits. Vettel, who was in the lead, also suffered a bad pit stop and fell to 13th place, thus destroying the great race he was doing and putting Norris, who had just overtaken Guanyu Zhou, in the points zone.

Hamilton and Verstappen began to trace times and the distance between them stabilized at around two seconds. Behind, Magunssen, with almost 30 laps in his average, was still on the track in sixth position, with an Alonso that little by little cut his time. Norris also made a great comeback and placed eighth, being a threat to the Spaniard.

With a few laps to go, Alonso overtook Magnussen and was sixth, while Verstappen moved into DRS position from Hamilton and a battle between two titans began that ended with the Red Bull driver reclaiming the lead.

Norris, after also overtaking Magnussen, got into the DRS zone with Alonso, in what was a fight for sixth position, or what is the same, the first of the rest.

Hamilton complained about Verstappen’s track limits, but his radio reports had no effect and the Dutchman ended up pulling away and crossing the checkered flag in uncontested first position. Behind, Alonso fought tooth and nail against Norris, but the McLaren driver ended up gaining the position and the Spaniard finished seventh.
