How the 2022 Australian Grand Prix F1 race went

Leclerc maintained his lead from pole position heading into Turn 1 at the start of the Australian race, leading ahead of Max Verstappen, a well-started Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez (who was blocked on the outside of turn 1), George Russell and Lando Norris, whose McLaren sank at the first corner.

Carlos Sainz ‘s second Ferrari started on the hard tire and struggled after a last-minute steering wheel change, dropping to 14th on the first lap. He then spun and his car stalled at turn 10, forcing the safety car out.

After the restart, Pérez passed Hamilton for third using DRS on the approach to Turn 3 on Lap 10.

Verstappen complained of tire problems as early as lap 12, when Leclerc increased his lead to more than 4 seconds. Verstappen also suffered some problems with his car’s sensors and was more than 8 seconds behind on lap 19 when he stopped to put on the hard tyres.

When Verstappen rejoined, Fernando Alonso’s Alpine, which had not been able to get off to a very good start on hard starts, passed Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri at Turn 3 to take eighth. There, Pérez was suffering from a lack of grip and had Hamilton on top of him, and he pitted on lap 21.

Leclerc stopped on lap 22, as did Hamilton, with everyone who had started on medium switched to hard. Hamilton overtook Pérez, but the Mexican soon hit him back on the outside on the approach to Turn 9.

A second safety car came out when Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin was left in the middle of the track after an accident by the four-time champion at the exit of Turn 4, and Russell took the opportunity to make his pit stop to move up to third place, by ahead of Alonso, who had not yet entered, Pérez and Hamilton.

Leclerc made a poor restart and Verstappen attacked him hard, but the championship leader held onto his lead by taking advantage of the inside of the first corner and then pulled away. Pérez passed Alonso for fourth on lap 30 and Hamilton did the same a lap later.

Pérez overtook Russell for third at Turn 11 on lap 37, which would later give him second place two laps later when Verstappen was asked to stop his car due to a technical fault. As the stewards retrieved his car, the virtual safety car was activated, and Alonso and Kevin Magnussen pitted.

Leclerc already had a 12-second lead over Pérez, ahead of Russell and Hamilton, Norris and Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren). The #16 Ferrari secured the fastest lap (beating Alonso, who had to make a second pitstop at the last minute after destroying his medium tyres) and took his second win of the season, extending his lead in the championship.

Pérez got a scare on his way to second place and finished more than 20 seconds behind.
