F1 technique: Ferrari's new rear wing for the Spanish GP

The second filming day of the Ferrari season, at the Monza circuit, served to meet the commercial needs of the Scuderia’s various sponsors, but also offered answers to the engineers led by Enrico Cardile .

Charles Leclerc was in charge of traveling the maximum of 100 kilometers established by the regulations for a day of these characteristics. The Monegasque alternated his number 16 and his helmet with 55 and the helmet of his teammate, Carlos Sainz, so that it was not necessary for both drivers to go to the track for a job that lasted just a few hours.

The opportunity to shoot without its former sponsor, Kaspersky , who disappeared from the F1-75 livery after the sanctions that were applied as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, allowed Ferrari to take advantage of the opportunity to test for the Spanish GP next weekend in Barcelona.

The temple of speed did not earn this nickname in vain, since it is like an open-air wind tunnel, ideal for verifying certain aerodynamic configurations. Ferrari took advantage of the morning to test some of them, with very short runs, it is said, at a constant speed on the straights, with which they tried to compare the data from reality and the simulation systems.

In short, a very scientific approach in a well-prepared mix of video recording and technical solutions that advised those responsible for Monza to shield the circuit with controls at each access, reaching an exaggerated level of security for a day of filming.

In Barcelona, Ferrari will carry an important update package with which the Scuderia hopes to catch up with Red Bull, which in the last two races (Imola and Miami) took victory from Max Verstappen, showing an advantage that Mattia Binotto , Ferrari boss, quantified in two tenths of a second.

The Monza theater therefore became an opportunity to evaluate certain solutions: the unloaded rear wing, which was not seen in Miami due to the fact that the asphalt grip was considerably less than that predicted in the simulations and which will be Useful for Canada, but above all it saw the high-load rear wing that will come into play at the 2022 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.

In the illustration drawn by Giorgio Piola you can see the differences with the rear wing that Ferrari used in the Miami GP.

The main profile has a deeper spoon shape in the central part, while it has a different and more profiled design towards the sides, in search of greater vertical thrust, trying not to go too much to the detriment of air penetration and, therefore, of efficiency.

The mobile flap has a greater chord and a more evident concavity, which will be especially useful in the third sector of the Montmeló track, where the F1-75 should make the difference compared to the Red Bull.
