F1 Technique: The great secret of Ferrari's traction in F1 2022

Imola is a medium-high downforce track, which enhances the aerodynamic characteristics of the car, but also knows how to highlight the mechanical qualities on the climbs and descents that put the tires to the test.

The greatest lateral loads that the Pirelli have to withstand are found in the areas of Piratella, Acque Minerali and the Gresini curve (the old Variante Alta).

The most violent braking on the track occurs in Tamburello and in the first corner of the Rivazza descent, where the Brembo system, developed exclusively for the Ferrari team, will be subjected to greater effort.

The Scuderia presents itself in the first of its home races with simulations that have offered positive data and the expectation is to give a new demonstration of the competitiveness of the F1-75 , which will appear at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari Autodrome with some changes.

Those from Maranello have insisted that they will not bring major improvements to Imola, largely due to the format of the sprint race, but they will try to continue mitigating some of the small problems that their car has.

These changes are essentially designed to reduce porpoising, although it does not seem that this phenomenon is affecting them in a noticeable way. Charles Leclerc himself stated that, in his case, it was not as annoying as in others.

In Imola also highlights the traction of the F1. This quality is easily seen at the exit of Tosa and Acque Minerali (two uphill sections) and, above all, after the second corner of Rivazza, which gives way to the fastest part of the long “straight” that leads to braking. of Tamburello.

If we look closely at the F1-75 , we can see some small aerodynamic appendages that Ferrari has added to the rear brake ducts.

It seemed that the new 2022 regulations were going to limit the proliferation of wings, as is the case at the front, but the aerodynamicists led by David Sánchez have managed to introduce up to five levels of profiles, all of them different in shape, chord and curvature.

The key to the extraordinary traction of the Italian car cannot be attributed solely to this aerodynamic solution, as there are other factors that contribute to the result, such as the quality of the differential, the design of the suspension, the cumulative power delivery between the endothermic engine or the hybrid system.

However, there is no doubt that the contribution of these profiles located in the brake line helps to generate the energy necessary for the tires to reach the ideal temperature window for their operation.

The image confirms that the team in charge of the F1-75 project has had time to develop the most elaborate solutions in all aspects, putting together a package that does not make a single detail of the car emerge victorious, but that the benefits are the result of a well-assembled set that exploits all the possibilities allowed by the regulations.
