F1 technique: what lies under the nose of the Ferrari F1-75

0

Since the presentation of the Ferrari F1-75 we had already highlighted a peculiarity of the red single-seater: the modular nose . That is a feature that teams have adopted with the introduction of spin single-seaters to suit the needs of the budget ceiling that forces them to seek maximum development efficiency to stay within spending limits.

Ferrari has formed the nose using three elements: the first block, the one that is coupled to the F1-75 chassis, is used to pass the FIA frontal crash test that has become more demanding this year. Then there is a second deformable part that is covered by a detachable body that can be easily modified for aerodynamic reasons.

Giorgio Piola’s drawing, in fact, shows us how the nose of the car, removing the layer that covers it, is rounded and only carbon fiber allows a design with that little “beak” that everyone has seen and that optimizes forms a nerve center of the single-seater, where the front wing shows the main profile in the shape of a spoon in the central part to feed an air passage that is destined towards the Venturi channels .

The four flaps that make up the front wing of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc’s car must be anchored to the nose because there are no longer any support pillars, so the teams had to find solutions that would facilitate interventions in the event of accidents in which will damage the main profiles.

Nothing in F1 is left to chance: thus, Ferrari could redesign the nose without having to resort to a second crash test, since the absorption structure would not be changed.

Red Bull is also taking great care of the front end of the RB18 : but contrary to what has been said, the Milton Keynes team has not changed the nose in Jeddah.

In his case, it is interesting to see how different his philosophy is in defining the deformable structure compared to the Ferrari.
