F1 thrashes MotoGP in open audience

This year Mediaset took over from RTVE to broadcast the Aragón and San Marino Grand Prix and Spanish fans had the opportunity to watch the MotoGP races openly the last two weekends.

Telecinco was the channel selected to broadcast the two races, while the classifications were seen on the thematic channel BeMad . This Monday the hearings were known, and according to data from the FormulaTV.com portal, the data was as follows:

Audience of the 2021 Aragon Grand Prix on Telecinco

  • Moto3 race: 362,000 viewers (8.8% share)
  • Moto2 race: 400,000 viewers (8.3% share)
  • MotoGP race: 957,000 viewers (11.2% share)

Audience of the 2021 San Marino Grand Prix on Telecinco

  • Moto3 race: 292,000 viewers (7.1% share)
  • Moto2 race: 426,000 viewers (9.0% share)
  • MotoGP race: 960,000 viewers (11.7% share)

The two grand prizes could also be followed like the rest of the season through DAZN , both on the platform and on the channels integrated since 2021 in Movistar+ . The owner of the exclusive broadcasting rights for MotoGP in Spain does not regularly provide data on its audiences on the platform, but the viewers who followed the two events on the DAZN channels on Movistar+ ( DAZN1 and DAZN2 ) are known.

Audience of the 2021 Aragon Grand Prix on DAZN1 (Movistar +)

  • Moto3 race: 115,000 viewers (2.8% share)
  • Moto2 race: 140,000 viewers (2.9% share)
  • MotoGP race: 280,000 viewers (3.4% share)

Audience of the 2021 San Marino Grand Prix on DAZN2 (Movistar +)

  • Moto3 race: 167,000 viewers (4.1% share)
  • Moto2 race: 181,000 viewers (3.8% share)
  • MotoGP race: 239,000 viewers (2.9% share)

At this point, the first thing that stands out is the drop in the audience of the grand prizes broadcast in open compared to the last two years. Neither of the two MotoGP races broadcast this month reached a million viewers on Telecinco and the total of the three in San Marino was 1,678,000 viewers.

In 2020, when the bikes returned to TVE nine years later, the total audience of the three categories of the Styrian GP was 2,291,000 viewers, with the MotoGP race being the most watched with 1,196,000 (13.8% share ). A year earlier, the Valencia GP, which was broadcast on Telecinco , had a total of 2,112,000 viewers, while the Argentine GP – held in the afternoon in Spain – brought together 4,101,000 people in front of television.

F1 does not engage in the open either, but it sweeps MotoGP

On May 9, Telecinco also broadcast the F1 Spanish Grand Prix. It was the first time that the World Cup had been seen openly since the Barcelona event in 2017, when it was offered by TVE . That Sunday, 1,824,000 viewers (14.1% share) chose the Mediaset channel to follow the race, almost 300,000 (6.5%) fewer than four years earlier.

DAZN and Vamos also broadcast the last F1 Spanish GP, bringing together 610,000 viewers between them at the time of the race. In the case of MotoGP – only on the DAZN channel of Movistar + –, in none did it exceed 280,000.

With all this, the number of people who watched the F1 race this year on Telecinco compared to the two in MotoGP was almost double and three share points less, figures similar to Movistar+ .

Behind this drop in open is undoubtedly the growth of the paying audience. According to the data provided, almost one in four people who watched the MotoGP race last Sunday did so through Movistar+s DAZN2 channel, to which should be added the users who watched live or deferred through the platform on demand, which is unknown.
