The Austrian Press Council dealt with 647 complaints in the Corona year 2021, 31 ethical violations were identified. Fake news played a central role in this.
The Austrian Press Council had to deal with a record number of complaints last year. In addition to violations of personality, one area in particular is emerging that is increasingly becoming a problem in Austrian media reporting: fake news. While “only” 297 cases were dealt with by the press council in 2019 and 418 in 2020, there were 647 complaints last year.
