Fernando Alonso clarifies his talk with Aston Martin in Japan

Motorsport.com photographers spotted Alonso in the hospitality of his future team, Aston Martin, at the recent Japanese GP, suggesting that talks on how to approach next season had already begun.

However, this Thursday in Austin , on the eve of the United States GP, the Spanish driver wanted to clarify what this meeting was due to, and denies that he is already working with the British team.

When asked how much he is already talking to Aston Martin about the plans for the 2023 season, he clarified that, as we published, the one who appeared with him on the scene was Matt Bishop , the veteran journalist who currently heads the communication department of the equipment.

“No, I spoke to Matt. So it was more of a communication issue, so nothing technical at the moment,” Alonso said of that meeting at Aston Martin hospitality.

And when asked when he will start working with them, he insists that he will stick to his contract with Alpine (which is currently opposed to releasing him before the end of the year): “January 1.”

Alonso and Alpine arrive at the Circuit of the Americas after a date in Japan where there were disagreements between the driver and the team about the strategy to follow with the tires in the complicated conditions left by the rain.

Now, almost two weeks later, Fernando Alonso says that there was no meeting with Alpine because there was nothing to resolve: “No. There is nothing to talk about. Sometimes we do it right, sometimes we are wrong. And in Japan, it was a mistake “.

In fact, he was sympathetic to his team when asked for his opinion on whether to listen to the drivers more from the pit wall: “No, I mean, it was a very complex race. Nobody understood which tire was the best.”

“And you have to be lucky too. If you stop early, like Vettel or Latifi did, and a safety car comes out because of another accident or whatever, you stay last, because you just came in. And there may be another red flag or whatever and the positions are set at that time. So you never know what’s going to happen.”

“Of course, I think we lost a couple of positions again, but yeah, that’s fine. That’s the way it is,” he concluded.

With four races to go, Alonso is 9th in the 2022 drivers’ championship, 13 points behind teammate Esteban Ocon and 19 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas.
