Formula 1 arrived at the Italian Grand Prix to celebrate one of the biggest sports parties at Ferrari’s home, but the celebrations were delayed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, one of the most important public figures in the United Kingdom. , the place where the highest category of motorsport comes from.

After a minute of silence in the pitlane, the tifosi were able to enjoy an hour of free practice in which they saw how their drivers, the Ferrari duo, took the top positions for a double led by Charles Leclerc. For his part, Carlos Sainz, was only 77 thousandths behind the time of his partner, although they are not very representative records, since Max Verstappen, the third in contention to fight to win the race, did not have a clean lap and only arrived to be fifth, more than four tenths off the best time.

Behind the Ferraris, Mercedes’ top speed was enough to put George Russell and Lewis Hamilton into third and fourth, although they are not expected to challenge the favorites in Sunday’s race. Those with the silver arrows should be battling with the Alpines, the theoretical fourth force on the grid, who managed to finish sixth and seventh with Esteban Ocon ahead of Fernando Alonso.

One of the names that has been mentioned the most in the paddock during the week, that of Yuki Tsunoda due to the controversy of his abandonment in Zandvoort, managed to rise to eighth place, beating Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo, who closed the top ten places in the first practice session in Monza.

Summary of Free Practice 1 (FP1) of the Italian Grand Prix 2022 Formula 1

The drivers and teams of the highest category of motorsports started the weekend of the 2022 Italian Grand Prix in mourning due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, one of the most important figures for the country that gave birth to Formula 1. Before Before going out on the track, everyone in the paddock observed a minute of silence in tribute to His Majesty with black armbands to remember him, and once the tribute was made, the cars were put on the asphalt.

Many started the event in Monza with enthusiasm, although before completing the first five minutes of the session, both Red Bulls were already at the top, with Max Verstappen ahead of Sergio Pérez still on hard tyres. However, the news went off the track, as the FIA published the document confirming the changes in the power units in which it was revealed that both Carlos Sainz as the only Mexican on the grid should add fifteen and ten positions respectively to their original place of departure.

They were not the only ones, since the reigning world champion surprised by deciding to change his internal combustion engine, something that forced him to add five places to the position he achieved in the classification on Saturday. Those who were already testing the session that defines the grid were his brothers from AlphaTauri, who tried slipstreams with Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly, while the Alpines, with a low-downforce single-seater, managed to climb to third and fourth place, with Fernando Alonso ahead of Esteban Ocon.

The tifosi had to wait to see their riders riding at high speed, and it was only halfway through the session that they jumped on the soft rubber with Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque gave his fans a joy thanks to setting the best time of the day so far, a 1:22.410 that was four tenths better than Verstappen’s time with the hard one, although everyone still had to do their qualifying simulation.

The first of the fastest cars to register a lap was Fernando Alonso, who with his Alpine and the red tire was eight tenths behind the fastest Ferrari to stay in third place, at the same time that Sergio Pérez was faster one second worse than his partner to get eighth.

Max Verstappen himself, in his first attempt, saw how Lando Norris’s McLaren frustrated his turn because it bothered him in the Variant Ascari, and far from giving him the slipstream, he blocked the Red Bull in the Parabolica, which caused the Dutchman raised his hand in protest. The Dutchman improved just one thousandth, although from behind they could not overtake him, since George Russell was only third, half a second behind Leclerc, and Alonso was fourth after beating his personal best.

With just over 20 minutes to go before the checkered flag, Ferrari fans were waiting for Sainz, who remained in the garage in 17th position and will probably spend some of his time for the rest of the weekend trying to give him the slipstream to Charles Leclerc in the classification due to his fifteen position penalty. However, he had the opportunity to make a record that allowed him to rise to second place, just 77 thousandths behind his teammate, while the Monegasque was a blink away from improving his time again.

The new faces, although well known, Nyck de Vries and Antonio Giovinazzi, rolled without problems with the Aston Martin and the Haas respectively, although in the lower part of the table, since only Nicholas Latifi stood between them in the last positions .

The rest of the session was used for laps that allowed the teams to gain insight into the condition of the tires over longer stints, as few drivers improved their times at Monza. However, some tried the loopholes, such as the Aston Martin rookie, who locked the front right wheel and went off in the Ascari Variant.
