The young girls in the Spanish royal family are growing up. West of London, Leonor and his sister Sofía attended the European Football Championship match between Spain and Denmark – without their parents.

Madrid/London – At the European Women’s Football Championship in England, heir to the throne Leonor (16) and sister Sofía (15) made their first official appearance abroad on behalf of the Crown without their parents, who stayed at home in Spain.

As far as is known, a visit from the British royal family was not planned. The two daughters of King Felipe (54) and Queen Letizia (49) attended the Spanish team’s match against Denmark at the Brentford Community Stadium west of London on Saturday evening – and celebrated Marta Cardona’s last-minute goal to make it 1-0 -Victory of the Spaniards. They were accompanied on the VIP stand by Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta.

After the final whistle, Leonor and Sofía went into the Spaniards’ dressing room to congratulate the team on reaching the quarter-finals, the royal family said. The head of the Spanish federation, Luis Rubiales, gave them national jerseys with the number 10 on their respective names.

Leonor had already left the royal nest last summer: she is continuing her schooling at a boarding school in Wales. She is due to complete one more school year at UWC Atlantic College on the south Welsh coast not far from Cardiff. The royal family had stressed that Leonor would not neglect her institutional duties in Wales. Sofía still lives with her parents in the Palacio de la Zarzuela northwest of Madrid. dpa
